Medium chain esters can be used in the manufacture of topical aerosols, foams, creams, ointments, and lotions as viscosity modifiers. The esters are almost odor-free, low in color and bland in flavor. Their viscosity at room temperature is less than those of common vegetable oils such as cottonseed and soybean. Caprylic and capric mono-diglyceride esters function as very effective carriers and solubilizers of active compounds. Mono- and diglyceride medium chain esters are particularly recommended for the dissolution of difficult compounds such as sterols and have also exhibited bacteriostatic activity.
